network file sharing what am missing

I've spent the last 5 hours trying to network my Vista build 5384 to XP SP2 through a D-Link DGL-4300. Neither computer can see the other but they can both ping each other. I have firewalls turned off on both systems as well as all that crazy Vista security for troubleshooting. My two XP systems can see and share with out a problem. What am I missing here?
